Nutrition in Sweet Rich Breads

Foods that are rich in calories usually get a bad wrap as far as nutrition is concerned, but nutritionists actually sometimes recommend them. Protein and/or calorie- rich breads may be beneficial for individuals who: have difficulty attaining or maintaining a healthy weight. This may be due to a high level of physical activity, poor appetite or consequences of illness or medical treatments. Most people consume protein in amounts that exceed their needs, however severe weight loss over a short period of time and certain medical conditions may create a need for extra protein intake.

Breads with a higher protein and energy content include ingredients such as the following:

Energy (calorie)-dense ingredients

oil, butter, margarine, cream cheese, sugar, honey, maple syrup, molasses, dried fruit, chocolate, jam, etc.

Protein-dense ingredients:

eggs, cheese, milk, yogurt, nuts, soy flour, etc.

Some people benefit nutritionally by choosing breads that contain these ingredients. By no means should the rest of us avoid the tasty varieties that contain these ingredients.
